It's Red Hat's worst nightmare

Radio Reg Forget wasting time with open source software minutiae. Episode 8 of Open Season dives right into the real things that matter - like food.

Mulesource CEO Dave Rosenberg, Alfresco exec Matt Asay and I fired up our mouths to discuss Tamarind, the only Michelin starred curry house going. It's a delicious spot in London's Mayfair district and worth the effort.

Once finished trying to score a free meal, we turned back to open source software looking at things such as Yahoo!'s sponsorship of the Apache Software Foundation, Red Hat's woes (we recorded this before the new CEO splash) and Google's bid for brain domination.

Part of the Red Hat discussion included speculation about IBM going whole hog with Ubuntu on the server. Dave and Matt say this will happen sooner than we think. I'm skeptical.

Er, we also revealed that Dave has a stalker and rated the top open source companies.

Show Notes - The Big Mitch

Yahoo! recently dropped some coin on the Apache Software Foundation. As usual, Open Season was unimpressed with the fundage. Well, in fairness, I was kind of impressed, as Yahoo!'s backing of Hadoop appears genuine and significant. Matt thinks Yahoo! could do a little more, but Matt always thinks that.
Elsewhere in the insanity kingdom, BusinessWeek reporter Stephen Baker decided that Google needed an extra helping of hyperbolic press. So, he credited Google with being the only company on the planet doing computer science and basically the key entity behind mankind's future.
Not to be outdone in what's known as Competitive Blowhardery, Tim "I dress so damned bad" O'Reilly found time to comment on how smart he is where Google and data are concerned
Um, not to beat up on Baker, but this mega-tool blogs about the process of writing his own stories, as if he were creating a beautiful work of art out of blood, sweat and tears rather than lunching with people at the Googleplex
And hardly an episode of anything can go by without mentioning Nick Carr's new book. Nick will be on my Semi-Coherent Computing show the first week of January.

Rosenrage

Dave was close to a heart attack when we started the show, and then his stress level heightened as we hit on his bog stalker. Disgusting.
Inevitably, the actions of one over-zealous man forced us into a discussion about the future of journalism and blogging. It was one of those days where I wished my head was less full of snot. Cold made me dumber than usual. No excuses. Coward.
Eventually, we ended up spending a ton of time talking about the VAR Guy's list of ten open source companies set to dominate 2008. He's talking about folks such as MySQL, Canonical, SugarCRM, Android (huh?) and OpenBravo. Dave and Matt rank the file and note that their companies should be on the list.
We polish off this open source adventure with a chat about Dave's Asus EEE laptop and my wicked new Vaio
