Sony has updated the UK PlayStation Portable firmware taking the handheld console's on-board system software to version 3.70 days after the Japanese code was released.

The software works with both the original PSP and the new, slimline version. The biggest change is the addition of a range of new colours for the console's main user interface, bringing an element of personalisation to the proceedings.

The update boosts the PSP's support for video stored on Memory Sticks rather than the device's native UMD media. So it's now possible to search for specific scenes within a movie, making your selection from a series of thumbnails the PSP displays.

"Sequential playback of videos that are saved on the Memory Stick Duo media is now supported," Sony said, by which we mean it'll play multiple files, in order, one after the other.

Finally, the PSP's existing photo slideshow feature has been tweaked to allow you to continue listening to music while you're watching.

PSP Firmware 3.70 can be downloaded on a PC and copied to the handheld using a Memory Stick, or you can download the update directly using the console's Wi-Fi connection if you have a wireless network.
