Canadian hockey geeks now courting Sun's McNealy

'We puck you'

Shame on us for assuming that Canadian hockey geeks cared more for homegrown hero RIM CEO Jim Balsillie than Sun Mircrosystems' chief puck chaser Scott McNealy. It turns out that the Geeks on Ice have invited McNealy to their April hockey tournament meant to celebrate the might of Canadian IT.

Yesterday, we declared that McNealy had been snubbed by the Geeks on Ice. That's because the group of amateur hockey players have spent the last few weeks touting their "Draft Jim from RIM" letter campaign meant to get Balsillie - a major hockey buff - to attend their tournament. Now, they've started a, er, McPlea for McNealy agenda. [Sorry - Ed]

The Register has learned that Trevor Macausland, co-founder of Geeks on Ice, today reached out to McNealy - no doubt after having seen our story. Sadly for the hockey buffs, McNealy will be traveling through Asia when the tournament takes place, according to our sources.

While there's little hope for the hockey fans this time around, we'd like to encourage other groups to tap Sun executives for their events. For example, we understand that Sun's chip guru Marc Tremblay was a world-class gymnast and Sun's software chief Rich Green used to fly fighter jets. So, if you have a gig involving parallel bars and a Stealth Bomber, please reach out early to the Sun crowd. ®
