Customers expecting to be charged a fiver a month for unlimited data, under 3's X-Series Silver plan, have found themselves in receipt of bills topping a hundred quid for exceeding their quota - due to a billing error at 3.

Several readers contacted us to report problems customers were having with unexpected bills, and the difficulty they've been having getting 3 to admit that any such problems exists.

Some were told that the bill was for exceeded their data plan, but as the 1GB limit is only a "fair use" recommendation the worst one should receive for exceeding it is a severe telling off.

When we contacted 3 we too were initially told that no problem existed, though it has now accepted that something went wrong. Heavy data users who received a bill in the last week might have been over-charged for that data. The problem has now been fixed, and 3 says it will call up everyone who was overcharged to arrange a recalculated bill, or a refund if necessary.

Anyone who believes they've been overcharged by 3, and hasn't received a call, should contact customer services for an immediate refund, and let us know if that doesn't work. ®
