Telefonica Germany gears up for quad play assault

Scene set for VoIP invasion

Telefónica in Germany is gearing up for a full scale assault on the German IPTV market and said it will upgrade its core network using Siemens Communications to expand its inner-core backbone.

Siemens will use routers from Juniper Networks and metro Ethernet switches from Extreme Networks and integrate them in the backbone network in Frankfurt, Berlin, and Düsseldorf.

This sets the scene for Telefónica to invade the German market with Voice over IP (VoIP) and, at some point in the future, IPTV and VoD services.

Telefónica plans to supply more than 1,500 cities and towns with the high-speed internet technology ADSL2+ by mid-2007, reaching 60 per cent of German households.

At present the network is mostly sold through ISPs that do not have a network of their own. They can now offer their customers differentiated products in the fields of DSL, data and telephony services, and in the future also triple play or video on demand.

As part of the first phase of its network expansion, Telefónica signed cooperation agreements with almost all major internet service providers last year and is also, among others, supporting O2 Germany in its entry into DSL business and a potential quadruple play.
