Nintendo's next-generation games console, Wii, will not ship in the UK at the end of November for around £170 - claims made this week by the Daily Star newspaper and subsequently denied by the videogames pioneer.

Technically, Nintendo hasn't denied the claims - it simply dubbed them "pure speculation" before pointing out that it has made no announcement as to when Wii will ship here or how much it will cost.

The newspaper's allegation follows recent speculation that Wii will debut sooner rather than later. In the past, Nintendo has hinted at a fourth-quarter release, but that will see the console arrive alongside Sony PlayStation 3. Nintendo has said the Wii will retail in the US for under $250 (£136), so we'd day you're looking at a UK retail price of £150-200, probably in the middle of that range. Nintendo hopes the lower price will win over buyers who might otherwise by tempted by the PS3 or even the Xbox 360. ®
