Database spin out Ingres has landed the NYSE's technology head to lead worldwide sales and marketing, and head up its development and engineering.

Roger Burkhardt, chief technology officer and executive vice president for the mighty New York Stock Exchange, is joining tiny Ingres as president and chief operating officer. Burkhardt is trading management of a global team of 2,000 for to look over 230 employees.

Ingres, a venture capital-led spin out from CA in November 2005, has operations in California, New York, and Slough, and claims customer implementations in 58 countries.

Ingres chairman and chief executive Terry Garnett said Burkhardt is "uniquely qualified to help Ingres become a dominant force in the rapidly evolving enterprise software market." Garnett will no-doubt hope that Burghardt's presence and his list of potential contacts will help open more than a few doors to Wall St tech shops running on Oracle's database.

Ingres is after a slice of Oracle's business. The company claims compatibility with Oracle, so is trying to persuade users they can easily migrate to Ingres and run mission-critical databases for a fraction of Oracle's licensing and support costs.

Elsewhere in the open source database pond, MySQL named former Check Point Software executive Paul Weinstein as EVP for business development. Weinstein held various business development and alliances positions at Check Point, building relationships with channel partners and driving corporate strategy and is expected to continue this role at MySQL.®
