Seagate will ship a 1TB version of its twin-drive, RAID-enabled Maxtor Shared Storage II network-attached storage (NAS) box later this month, the company announced yesterday.

The box contains a pair of 500GB 7,200rpm disk drives which can be configured either as a 1TB data store or as a 500GB RAID 1 array for greater data security - files are written to both drives in case one fails.

The Shared Storage II has a single Gigabit Ethernet port to hook it up to any wired network or to a physical bridge connected to a wireless LAN. It also sports a pair of USB ports to allow you to add more storage capacity or to hook up a shared printer.

Seagate said the unit will work with up to 20 connected PC and Mac clients. The drive will ship with what the company claimed is easy-to-use admin and back-up software. It will also auto-sort media files into dedicated folders from where they can be streamed out across the network to UPnP and DLNA-compatible audio-visual devices.
