Think Outside's Boomtube portable speakers are housed in an aluminium tube with ends that twist off that reveal stereo satellite speakers.

The central section accommodates a pair of 56mm/2 inch drivers, so that's four drivers, with a total rating of 40Watts RMS. It also accommodates a rechargeable Li-Ion battery that is claimed to last for five hours. Hi-Fi fans will know that if you stick a small speaker in a tube, it makes an enormous thumping bass noise.

There's a bit of spaghetti involved as the satellites connect to the main tube with RCA cables and you connect your MP3 player/mobile phone/CD player to the tube with a 3.5mm audio jack. You also get a 2.5mm adapter in the package.

Boomtube is American so the vital statistics are given as diameter 2.75 inches x length 12.5 inches, weight 3.2 lbs As part of The Reg service we've translated that to 70mm diameter, length 318mm and 1.45kg weight. Should any pedant wish to correct us and say that kilograms are a unit of mass, they are free to do so.

The speaker drivers are dual neodymium with a response range of 50Hz-20KHz and a signal/noise ratio: > 70dB.

The UK distributor is Widget UK Ltd. Retail price is £169.99. ®
