PlusNet slips out 'basic' broadband

PlusNet has slipped out a new entry level broadband product for a tenner a month. Its "Basic" product offers speeds of up to 8 meg but is aimed at people currently on a dial-up service, or those with no net access at all.
For £9.99 a month, subscribers get 50 meg of usage. Additional time online can be purchased for 0.024p per meg.
According to PlusNet's figures, someone who used 1 gig a month would pay £12.12.
While the monthly charge is low, punters will be expected to cough up around £50 for a one-off connection charge and pay for a broadband modem.
Neil Armstrong, marketing director of the Sheffield-based ISP, said: "Adding PAYG Basic to our range makes it as easy as possible to get onto broadband. It also underpins the opportunity for millions of existing broadband users to make significant savings."
It's estimated that seven million UK homes have PCs without net access while more than four million are still using dial-up to access the web.
A similar package from BT would cost more than £55 a month while rival local loop unbundling outfit Bulldog can currently do it for just over £42 a month.
