O2 is recalling its own-brand X1 handset after reports that the phones can overheat while charging and pose a fire risk. The panic forced O2 to pay for ads in the national newspapers this morning.

The warning on O2's website says:

For safety reasons O2 recommend that you do not re-charge your X1 phone and return it to us together with charger for replacement immediately. In extreme cases this fault may cause overheating and fire when charging.

About 140,000 O2 subscribers use one of the self-destructing devices. The X1i is not affected by the recall.

O2 is offering to replace the incendiary model with the X2i via courier, though will not be offering compensation for the time customers spend off the network. A spokeswoman told the Reg that they would just endeavour to get new phones out to stranded users as quickly as possible.

X1 owners who continue using the faulty handsets will face a bar on all calls from the 27 March.

The X1 was supplied by a Far Eastern manufacturer and met with little praise when it launched in 2003. ®
