Sony will show off a monster 82in LCD TV in January - ten months after Samsung demo'd just such a beast of its own.

According to a Nihon Keizai Shimbun report, Sony will unveil its prodigious panel at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Samsung's screen made its debut last March at the CeBIT show, held in Hannover, Germany.

At this stage, little is known about the Sony screen's specifications. Samsung's was a 1920 x 1080 widescreen job capable of displaying HD video at 1080p at 60fps. The display uses Samsung's patented Super Patterned-ITO Vertical Alignment (S-PVA) technology to achieve extra-wide viewing angles, apparently. It also boasts a low-dispersion colour filter and ultra high aperture ratio, achieving a contrast ratio of at least 1200:1 and brightness of 600cd/m². Response times are at 8ms or faster. Its backlight raises color saturation to 92 per cent. ®
