AOL has unveiled details of a new broadband TV service that will see the giant ISP raid the archives of sister company Warner Bros. The new "In2TV" service is due to be launched early in 2006 enabling broadband users to stream full-length episodes of programmes including Kung Fu, Spenser: For Hire, The New Adventures of Batman, Pinky and the Brain and Growing Pains.
The service will be free and on-demand via the Web, and funded by advertising. However, it will only be available to broadband punters in the US.
A spokesman for AOL UK told us: "This is a US announcement for US users of the aol.com portal.
"We are looking at video on demand services and other content ideal for high speed broadband services [in the UK] and hope to announce something in the near future."
AOL's decision to offer a broadband TV service comes as research shows that half of all US households has access to high speed net access.
"With In2TV, we are enabling Web users to experience and interact with television programming in an entirely new way, and creating a new distribution platform for TV content," said AOL Media Networks bigwig Kevin Conroy.
"This is an exciting new way to experience these shows, allowing Web users to enjoy what they want, when they want it. We view this collaboration as truly transformational and yet another demonstration of our commitment to making our next-generation AOL.com portal the best destination for video on the Web."
In the UK, there's been a flurry of interest in broadband TV lately. ITV recently launched a trial on the south coast providing local content for local people while BT plans to poll out its IPTV service in late summer 2006. ®
