Gizmondo maker Tiger Telematics will next year offer a widescreen version of the handheld games console, the company's CEO has revealed, the better to compete with the PSP.

"We're looking at bringing out future generations early next year, a widescreen version of our device that's not dissimilar in the size to the screen of the Sony PSP," Tiger chief Mike Carrender said last week, in an interview with US console magazine Next Generation.

The PSP sports a 4.3in display, the Gizmondo a 2.8in job.

It's a brave - some might say foolhardy - statement to make. The Gizmondo has yet to launch in the US - it's due in October, after being postponed from early August - but the company is already talking about successor models.

Tiger has also pledged to ship 'Bizmondo', a business-oriented smart-phone product.

Carrender confirmed that the US market will see standard Gizmondos priced at $400 alongside the cheaper, advertising-subsidised version, which will cost $239. ®
