Europe is spanking the US after leapfrogging "The Americas" to become the world's second-largest broadband region.

With 48 million high-speed net users, Europe has moved into second place beating the US, with 47.53 million broadband users, for the first time.

According to research by TelecomPaper, there are now more than 158 million broadband users in the world. And with 61 million broadband users, Asia Pacific is still the world's number one broadband region, accounting for four in ten of all high-speed lines.

With almost 12 million lines, South Korea remains the top broadband nation followed by the Netherlands and Denmark.

The figures, contained in World Broadband Q1-2005, follow a recent OECD report which revealed that there were some 118 million broadband users at the end of 2004 in the 30 countries that make up the OECD - up 34 million during the year. ®
