Complex tariffs and poor service are just two of the reasons why UK SMEs reckon they get a rough deal from mobile phone operators.

According to research carried out by Orange, big corporate customers get better service and value for money from mobilephonecos compared to small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs).

Six out of ten beancounters quizzed as part of a survey of 250 SMEs said they received "second rate value compared to larger enterprises" while eight in ten said SMEs "deserved the same benefits and services from mobile operators as larger enterprises.

Even the beancounters are often foxed by the complexity of mobile tariffs leading three quarters of those surveyed to believe that they have been overcharged for services.

"Small and medium size companies want a fairer deal from mobile operators," says Orange's Alastair MacLeod.

"They want a straightforward deal that offers a level playing field for businesses of all sizes and removes the need for considerable time and resources to be spent on selecting an appropriate package," he said.

Publication of research coincided with the launch of a "new deal" for SMEs from Orange called Business Plus, which promises the "UK's clearest and best value mobile package that will apply to all businesses, regardless of their size". ®
