Troubled telecoms provider Marconi is meeting the DTI today as the government looks for ways to keep some of the firm’s research and development jobs in the UK.

Marconi was clawing its way back to stability until BT announced last month it would not consider the firm for its £10bn next-generation network. Marconi's shares fell 40 per cent on the news.

The company recently announced 800 UK job cuts but there are fears that more engineering jobs may go as a result of the deal signed with Chinese manufacturer Huawei. The two agreed to distribute each other's products and are still discussing plans to jointly develop products.

Marconi chief executive Mike Parton will meet DTI minister Alan Johnson today, according to the FT. Johnson believes the DTI may be able to help with retraining.®
