eBay has is expanding its international classifieds business with the acquisition of UK-based Gumtree.com for an undisclosed sum. The deal was transacted through Kijiji, eBay's international classifieds business.

Founded in 2000 at the height of the dotcom boom, Gumtree.com offers city-based online communities with loads of local info on matters such as accommodation, jobs and where to eat and drink. Its sites cover areas in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Kijiji - which means "village" in Swahili - does much the same in 90 cities across Europe and the Far East. ®
