Azul Systems - the Java server company - has plucked former Sun Microsystems high performance computing chief Shahin Khan off the free agent market.

Khan joined Azul this week as vice president and chief marketing officer. He's already made it on the company's web site and is expected to be highly touted in a statement issued tomorrow. Khan rather unexpectedly left Sun back in June after 8 glorious years in a variety of roles.

"I looked at many companies in different categories and decided on Azul because of the quality of the team, a compelling value proposition, unique technology and its partnership strategy in a growing market segment," Khan told The Register.

The growing market segment at hand is the specialized server segment. Azul next year plans to come out with a Java application server workhorse. It has designed a stunning 24 core processor meant to crank through Java software threads at a much quicker clip than general purpose systems.

The company is headed by former Cobalt and Sun executive Stephen DeWitt who no doubt ran into Khan at Sun's refurbished Santa Clara nut house.

Khan will be an aggressive staffer and has a lot of experience dealing with the Java software world. Not a bad pickup for a wee firm. ®
