UK games publisher Eidos has confirmed speculation that it has entered into talks with a number of other companies to discuss possible takeover deals.

The company stressed that the negotiations are "at a preliminary stage" and could easily end without "offer being made for the company".

Eidos' board said it doesn't expect to make any further comment on the talks before the company publishes its annual financial results early in September. Eidos completed its most recent fiscal year on 30 June.

Earlier that month, the company warned that it would at best break even or even report a loss for the year after it was forced to delay the release of its upcoming Vietnam War game, Shellshock: 'Nam 67, to September. Rescheduling Shellshock means that the game's revenue will now come in during Eidos' current financial year.

At the time of the profit warning, Eidos' share price fell to 90p, but this week it was back over 100p on the speculation and subsequent takeover talks announcement. ®
