Around 40 staff are facing redundancy at business-focused ISP VIA NET.WORKS UK after the company announced plans to restructure the organisation.

Although it's hoped that most of the job losses will be voluntary, the company is unable to rule out compulsory redundancies.

Following the job losses, around 70 people will work at the company. A year ago the company employed 180 staff at its offices in Staines and Warrington, although this was reduced by a third in May 2003 following a round of job cuts.

In a statement, VIA NET.WORKS said it was "restructuring its own organisation and realigning its skills base".

Said MD Nick Callaghan: "VIA Group is shifting its focus from mostly providing Internet access services to a higher emphasis on providing web hosting and Internet security services on its own infrastructure.

"This strategy is a reflection of the on-going changing economics of the Internet industry," he said. ®
