Chip sales fell in January

World chip sales dipped three per cent in January, with revenues falling to $15.55bn from December 2003's $16.03bn, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported yesterday.
January revenues are traditionally lower than those of December, but year-on-year comparisons are favourable - 26 per cent higher than January 2003's $12.28bn.
The SIA is sticking by its forecast of an annual growth rate of 19.4 per cent this year.
Mmarket watcher Gartner forecasts '04 "conservative" growth of 22.6 per cent. If conditions are right, 2004 revenues could exceed last year's by 30 per cent or more, it said.
Sales in all geographic markets were down in January from December, but well up on January 2003's numbers. In particular, Asia Pacific saw sales jump 34 per cent, thanks to growth in China. The Japanese chip market grew 32 per cent, Europe 19.5 per cent and the Americas 14.8 per cent year-on-year. ®
