Intel's Dothan successor to consume 45W at 65nm – report

What OEMs are designing for, apparently

Intel will follow its recently delayed 'Dothan' mobile microprocessor with 'Jonah' late next year, Japan's PC Watch claims, speculating that the part may even be one of Chipzilla's first 65nm products.

The latter claim is based on indications from the paper's sources that Jonah's likely to appear late in 2005 and will come in with a power consumption rating of 45W.

The figure comes from a statement made by an IBM ThinkPad engineer that the company is designing next-generation thin'n'light notebooks with that kind of power consumption in mind.

Dothan, by contrast, consumes 21W of power, the article suggests, citing OEM sources. The design envelope is 25W. That will rise to 30W when Intel launches a version that supports a 533MHz effective bit rate frontside bus later this year.

The article reckons, not unreasonably, that the Low-Voltage and Ultra-low Voltage versions of Jonah will consume significantly more power that their Dothan equivalents.

Little else is known about Jonah other than it will almost certainly clock beyond 2.13GHz, the highest speed Dothan reaches in current roadmaps.

The upshot of all this, PC Watch suggest, is an opener for Transmeta, whose 90nm Efficeon is expected to clock comparably with Jonah but potentially with a much lower power consumption - around 25W. ®
