A Californian man has been arrested after allegedly building a miniature camera into his shoe so that he could peer up women's dresses.

James Rich, 56, was collared by cops at a classic car show in Palo Alto, California last Sunday when "someone noticed that he had little interest in cars and a particular focus on skirted women attending the event", Reuters reports.

According to the police, Rich had rigged a tiny lens in his shoe laces to a video camera via a wire leading up his trouser leg.

"It's kind of like a modern version of the guy with a mirror on his shoe," Palo Alto detective Jim Coffman told the news agency, adding that the camera Rich used was of a type police might use for surveillance purposes.

Rich was booked for a misdemeanour offence of "taking photographs of skin or underwear when there is an expectation of privacy" before been released. ®
