BT nears 1 million BB milestone

Almost there?

There's speculation that BT could use this Thursday's results to announce that it has hit its 1 million ADSL milestone.

Early last year the telco announced price cuts to its wholesale broadband product that, it said, would help it deliver one million DSL broadband connections by summer 2003.

According to sources the telco is almost there, with the latest figures suggesting BT had notched up around 950,000 ADSL lines as of the end of last week.

One insider described it as being "too close to call" whether the telco would make it.

However, other sources claim the monster telco will fall just short of the target.

Of course, if BT has done enough to say on Thursday that it's reached its magic milestone then it would be a triumph for the monster telco and a major PR coup.

If it doesn't - ah well, it's still an impressive effort all the same. And it gets to create a yet another splurge in the next couple of weeks or so.

Another point of interest tomorrow will be to see how much progress BT has made to reach its target of 500,000 BT Broadband (its wires only, no-frills service) lines by summer 2003.

In February, a report claimed that BT only had 100,000 or so BT Broadband punters despite throwing millions at an ad campaign to promote the service. ®
