Sega brings console classic to Palm Tungsten

Bleep-bleep-woooooh

Sonic the Hedgehog has rolled onto the Palm platform, as Sega today began officering five "classic" - old, in other words - console games for Palm's Tungsten-T PDA.

The games - Sonic the Hedgehog, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Shinobi, Super Columns and Shining Force II: The Sword of Hajya - are all available for "select" ARM-based Palms. Until Palm ships the anticipated wireless Tungsten-C, that means just the Tungsten-T for now.

Not that owning the latest-generation handheld gets you the latest generation of games: Sega's first batch of titles were first released between 1991 and 1995. Some are fondly remembered, but the last thing Palm wants is for game developers to assume its users are only interested in hand-me-downs, whether they're from Sega or anyone else.

Then again, some of us can't wait for decent Doom and Quake ports.

Sega's involvement at least helps Palm demonstrate that there is a market for A-title games on its PDAs in addition to the many shareware titles that have been offered to date.

Each game costs $19.95, but many are also available as time-limited demo versions. ®
