Memory maker Elpida has announced the first GDDR2-M memory chips for notebook graphics systems.
ATI's Mobility Radeon 9600, announced yesterday, will be the first graphics part to support GDDR2-M, which is a variant of regular DDR 2 SDRAM. ATI co-developed the new memory technology.
GDDR2-M is designed to cut memory chip power consumption. It uses a reduced current termination circuit, allowing manufacturers to build smaller circuit boards. It also alters the pattern of data flowing between memory and graphics chip to minimise switching, or data flipping. That apparently increases the signal-to-noise ratio, enabling lower power chips.
Elpida is sampling 128Mb devices with clock speeds of 350, 400 and 450MHz, and fabbed at 0.13 micron. The chips operate at between 1.8V and 2.5V, and consume just 1.7W at 350 and 400MHz.
Full-scale production is due to begin next quarter. ®
