Samsung is first off the starting-block with a Centrino-based notebook, the X10, this morning, ahead of the mobile processor platform's official launch later today.

Samsung has a head start in any case: it was Intel's sole Centrino validation partner, working with the chip giant to tune both hardware and chipset to the applications Intel has in mind.

The 'thin and light' (2.4cm high, 1.8kg) X10 series comprises three models: the 1300, 1500 and 16000, equipped with a Pentium M running at 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6GHz, respectively. The first two have 256MB of DDR SDRAM, the 1600 has 512MB. The models' hard drive capacities are 30, 40 and 60GB, respectively.

802.11b is built in, with an Intel PRO 2100 wireless card filling the notebook's single mini-PCI slot. 100Mbps Ethernet, 1394 and an internal modem are available for wired connectivity.

Each X10 ships with a 14.1in LCD driven by Nvidia's GeForce 440 Go chip with 64MB of video RAM. A slimline - at 9.5mm the world's thinnest, Samsung claims - DVD/CD-RW drive provides optical storage and can be connected to home entertainment systems via SVHS and optical S/PDIF ports.

The series sports Memory Stick ports and Samsung's fingerprint authentication system.

Prices range from £1399 to £1899. ®
