Swiss telecoms operator Swisscom today announced the acquisition of WLAN hotspot firms Megabeam and WLAN AG. Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Swisscom has already launched wireless hot spot services in Switzerland through its subsidiary Swisscom Mobile AG, and plans to use the acquisitions to roll out a pan-European WLAN Service.

Under the agreements, Megabeam and WLAN AG are to be incorporated within a new organisation, called Swisscom Eurospot.

Public WLAN operator Megabeam has network rights at 14 major airports and over 100 business hotels across Europe.

Through its acquisitions, more than 400 hotspots (Hotels, Airports, Conference Centres, Train Stations etc.) are under contract to Swisscom and its subsidiaries. Of these, approximately 100 are currently operational. Together with the about 400 hotspots of its roaming partners, Swisscom Eurospot will offer service at over 800 hotspots. ®
