ComputerWire logo Hughes Electronics Corp's decision to exit the DSL market in the US has remaining ISPs competing for the business of its soon-to-be stranded customers.

With 160,000 broadband subscribers up for grabs, EarthLink Inc yesterday announced it will offer DirecTV DSL customers a $21.95 a month introductory offer, as well as specials on dialup subscriptions.

Hughes, however, has selected regional Bell operating companies as its preferred transition partners, announcing a number of partnerships over the last two weeks.

The company said that BellSouth Corp, Verizon Online and SBC Communications Inc (in partnership with Yahoo! Inc) are its preferred replacements in their three respective geographical franchises.
