What's (not) up with Mydomain.com, Namesdirect.com?

Hardware failure

Reg readers are reporting problems with accessing sites hosted by mydomain.com. And some Mydomain.com customers have told us that their email boxes have been empty since this morning.

Our attempts to access Mydomain.com and sister site NamesDirect.com, which describes itself as "an ICANN accredited registrar and one of the top 10 DNS hosts in the world", are met with DNS error messages.

However, http://forum.mydomain.com is on air. A message posted by mydomain staff on this bulletin board reveals the problem:

fix is coming very soon. It appears to have been a firewall issue. We have a fail-over for the firewall, but this appears to have suffered the same fate. The guys working on getting it fixed have Cisco on the phone and should have everything fixed very shortly. I'll post more as soon as the status changes.

(We linked to the wrong status message in an earlier version of this report.)

Mydomain.com and NamesDirect.com are described as brands of NameZero.com.inc, of La Jolla, California, whose website is up and running today.

NameZero.com.inc claims to be the world's third biggest domain hosting company. Unusually for a big Web business, it is a Microsoft shop. ®
