Thomson to stop making TiVo boxes
TiVo seeks new partner
TiVo has confirmed that its UK partner, Thomson, is to stop manufacturing its popular line of Personal Video Recorders.
In a statement issued to us, TiVo said the decision the end the relationship with Thomson was amicable It is "actively speaking to partners and potential licensees" about future products for the UK.
The company is keen to stress the Thomson termination will have minimal impact on its UK subscribers.
"Existing and future subscribers will remain unaffected as TiVo continue to provide the service directly and warranty and service conditions still apply," it said.
"Customer service and support will continue to be provided on TiVo's behalf by Sky and Thomson will repair any boxes under warranty and will also repair units outside warranty for a flat fee."
TiVo statement follows posts on PVR user forums earlier this week suggesting the end of the Thompson contract would lead to "substantial price-cuts around the UK as stockists attempt to clear their supplies". TiVo's PVR normally costs £200 but a quick survey of hardware retailers this afternoon reveals the device can now be picked up for £150 or less.
Tivo advises that demand for its devices has been strong and "has been strong and there is now limited availability of the Thomson TiVo receivers available through retail".
It advises customers that TiVo boxes can still be purchase through in larger retailers or ordered by calling Sky's TiVo Hotline on 08702 418486. ®
