Fujitsu is to adopt Linux as one of its "key operating systems" for next generation IT systems, and is rolling out Linux versions of nine of its middleware and packaged software products, the target being to have commercialised large-scale, mission-critical enterprise systems running on Linux within the next three years.

The company announced the commitment last week in Japan (the initial wave of products is aimed at the Japanese market). Fujitsu, which says it will promote and actively support Linux, feels that Linux is expanding out of Internet-related server areas and is making headway as an OS for business applications. The company says it will accelerate this by:
- Working closely with distributors to deliver applications compatibility and long-term support;
- Cooperating with and contributing to the open source community's efforts to improve and augment the Linux operating system;
- Developing and providing middleware and packaged software solutions for corporate systems;
- Reinforcing its systems support organization for open source software;
- Providing hardware platforms and core software that improve the scalability and reliability of the Linux operating system.

Seven middleware products, including PRIMECLUSTER clustering software, will be available in Japan from this month, while software solutions for carriers will ship there from March 2003. Fujitsu is also to offer Red Hat Advanced Server with its PRIMERGY servers from December, and in addition to certifying interoperability for its own middleware, will be doing so for third party applications, including Oracle 9i. ®
