Microsoft Corp has delayed the introduction of its handheld "home companion" technology, Mira, until the New Year. Microsoft had hoped to introduce the technology, officially known as Windows CE for Smart Diaplays, in time for its OEM partners to capitalize on the lucrative holiday season.

Mira will now receive its US and Asian launch in the first quarter of next year. Microsoft had always intended to introduce the technology in Europe sometime during the first half of 2003.

Mira devices are intended as wireless companions to desktop systems, allowing remote access via an 802.11b wireless LAN (WLAN) link to PC-based applications such as word processors, email and the internet. Each will sport a large LCD color display, an Intel XScale processor and the Windows CE.NET operating system. At least 15 hardware manufacturers are committed to the Mira concept.
