BT has confirmed today that Todmorden - along with six other areas - is to get broadband.

BT has hailed today’s news as "terrific", claiming that by identifying pockets of demand it can now invest in broadband with certainty.

Along with Todmorden in West Yorkshire, which should be ADSL-enabled next month, BT has also named Irby on the Wirrall, Paddock Wood and Pembury in Kent, Penn in Buckinghamshire, Ponteland in Northumberland and Twyford in Berkshire.

These exchanges are expected to go live in December.

A further three exchanges in Leek in Staffordshire, Bishops Waltham in Hampshire and Kesgrave in Suffolk are within a smidgen of securing enough validated orders to see their exchanges upgraded to ADSL.

However, the pre-registration scheme still doesn’t have the full support of ISPs, including a number of high profile operators. They’ve been critical of the process, with one claiming that it had been introduced "in a bit of a rush by BT".

A spokesman for BT called on them to take part in the scheme adding: "The more ISPs involved the better." ®
