Net users in the US still don't trust that their personal information is safe when they're online.

A survey of 10,000 households found that more people in the US are going online compared to last year.

The Consumer Internet Barometer - produced by NFO WorldGroup, Forrester Research and The Conference Board - found that 61 per cent of people in the US go online, up two points compared to the end of last year.

However, researchers found that while satisfaction levels have risen during the last nine months, trust levels have not, with many users admitting that they still don't fully trust that their personal information is secure.

However, there was one exception. According to the survey, people who conduct financial transactions online appear to be even more trusting than they were before.

The survey found that 31 per cent of punters who engage in online financial transactions trust that their personal information will be safe, compared with 27 per cent almost a year ago.

Elsewhere, the report found that three in ten of online consumers spent more than $250 in the third quarter, an increase of four percentage points on Q4 last year.

It also found that a third of US Net users go online everyday, while 15 per cent hook up to the Net several times a week.
