Advanced Micro Devices Inc laid the groundwork for a major drive into the Chinese PC market yesterday when it signed a joint venture agreement with a state-backed company targeting the country's education sector.

The Sunnyvale, California-based vendor has struck a research and development joint venture agreement with Beijing-based China Baisc Education Software Company Ltd (CBE). CBE is itself backed by Shanghai Shenhua Holdings Company Ltd, the Chinese Ministry of Education owned National Center for Curriculum and Tex and the Beijing Normal University.

The joint venture, dubbed the Beijing CBE AMD Information Technology Company Ltd (ITC JV), will develop desktops aimed at students and teachers, and a classroom server. The platforms will feature AMD's x86 and MIPS-based processors, as well as its flash memory.

China has been increasingly attracting the attentions of silicon valley-based companies looking for untapped markets as growth in mature PC markets slows to a crawl. China, with its vast population, is seen as a key driver of PC sales growth in the future.
