The wolves are circling WebGain Inc's former user community, as Borland Software Corp today teamed with BEA Systems Inc to offer migration technology to the defunct company's customers.

Scotts Valley, California-based Borland will today launch a free migration wizard that converts the Visual Café integrated development environment (IDE) into the JBuilder IDE by altering project files and source code.

JBuilder WebGain Import Wizard is available from Borland's web site, will ship with JBuilder, WebLogic Server Enterprise Edition - due on 25 September - and be offered by Borland partner San Jose, California-based BEA.

Director of product management for Borland's Java business unit Bill Pataky said all of the Visual Café source code would be converted while a white paper and FAQ would assist with any problems experienced by customers. Borland will also provide technical support.

Borland is hoping to pick-off members of the defunct WebGain's community, now in the hands of TogetherSoft Corp. Raleigh, North Carolina-based TogetherSoft has launched its own migration wizard, TogetherSoft Integrator, to move Visual Café program files to TogetherSoft Control Center. Borland is believed to be smarting after it was beaten by TogetherSoft to acquire WebGain's Java IDE.

Pataky said customers would pick Borland because it has experience in application lifecycle management and offers tight integration with BEA's application server. "TogetherSoft is coming from the modeling space and is relatively new to the entire lifecycle," he said.

A spokesperson for TogetherSoft rejected Borland's claim, adding it is for customers to choose the environment that suits their particular needs.
