Intel Corp has spun out its interests in high-speed content processing with a new privately funded company. The company, called Tarari Inc, has raised $13m in a Series A round of funding.

San Diego, California-based Tarari has been spun out of Intel's Network Processing Group and will focus on the development of hardware and software designed to accelerate network security and web services applications on standard high-volume servers and network appliances.

Santa Clara, California-based Intel has retained an equity investment in the start-up through its Intel Capital corporate venture arm. The $13m venture funding came from Crosspoint Venture Partners and XMLFund, an XML-focused venture capital firm. Representatives from both companies have a seat on Tarari's board.

Tarari will focus on the development of specialized processing engines, called Tarari Content Processors, that inspect message content and enable it to be managed and processed at line speed for more efficient message prioritization, scheduling and filtering. The core Tarari technology is based on dynamically reprogrammable hardware, Application-Specific Integrated Circuits and a high-speed software layer.

The company is planning to target two major markets: XML processing for accelerated web services, and anti-virus processing for more efficient message scanning. The company's first products are not expected to be available until later this year.

Tarari is managed by several former Intel executives, including president and CEO, Randy Smerik, who was formerly the general manager of Intel's Network Equipment Division, and vice president of engineering, Jeff Carmichael, who was formerly the engineering director for the Network Equipment Division.
