VIA today announced a whizzy new Pentium 4 mobo, the first to incorporate its new P4X266E chipset.

The VIA P4PB 266E supports the new 533MHz FSB Intel P4 CPUs, six channel audio through the onboard VIA VT1616 audio codec, AGP4X, DDR266, and ATA/133. There's a smart card connector too. But as per, there are no pricing details. You'll have to call your local distie to get the gen on that.

Best known for its chipsets, the Taiwanese company has been expanding rapidly into new segments over the last year or so. The own-brand mobo line has more to do with needs-must than strategy, though. Very few mobo makers want to risk the wrath of Intel, by buying P4 chipsets from VIA. The two companies are locked in litigation over P4 licensing rights, and Intel has enjoined several VIA disties and OEMs in the action.
