Guys - a note for your diary. Next Friday (the 17th May) is World Telecommunication Day.

Who says so? Well, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - that's who.

Just in case you didn't know, the theme for the day is "ICT for all: empowering people to cross the Digital Divide".

It seems Friday 17 May is an excellent opportunity to launch "public campaigns and advocacy activities in favour of equal access to ICT for all those who find themselves at an information disadvantage".

In particular, the ITU suggests that we "measure and take stock of the situation concerning ICT access, and in particular, with respect to women in rural areas".

El Reg asked BT and Oftel what they planned to do to celebrate World Telecoms Day. Both august organisations told us they had nothing planned.

A shortage of access to rural women perhaps? No matter.

Anyways, if you wanna take part why not buy your phone a bunch of flowers or a box of choccies...you know...just to show your appreciation...just to take part in World Telecoms Day...as a gesture. After all , it's the though that counts. ®
