AOL UK has finally set a date for when its subscription free ISP Netscape Online will close.

The service will shut on June 27 - nine months after AOL UK first announced its intention to close the ISP.

In an email to its Netscape Online users, AOL UK claims that service is being canned due to the "increasing popularity of unmetered and broadband services".

The Netscape browser and portal are unaffected by today's decision.

In a bid to woo Netscape Online users over to AOL UK's subscription service the ISP is offering punters a three-month free trial of AOL UK's unmetered service.

Netscape Online users have until May 31 to take-up the offer.

While AOL UK has confirmed that it is pulling the plug on Netscape Online it continues to remain tight-lipped about the future of another of its ISP brands - CompuServe.

Sources claim that AOL UK is on the verge of announcing that CompuServe is to close in the summer.

El Reg understands that the CompuServe 2000 service will close by the end of the summer although CompuServe Classic will continue to operate.

A spokesman for AOL UK said: "We have nothing to announce." ®
