CeBIT AMD announced three new high-end CPUs, coinciding nicely with the first day at CeBIT, the world's biggest computer show.

On parade is the Athlon XP 2100+ for desktops, which gets a huge thumbs-up from Tom's Hardware. This clocks in at 1733MHz, but outstrips faster clocking Intel P4s, THG says. However it notes that the processor is "maxed out on performance" with the Palomino core at least while using the 0.18m pmanufacturing process. Roll on the upcoming cooler Thoroughbred core.

The other two CPU launches are the AMD Athlon MP processor 2000+ for servers and workstations; and the mobile AMD Athlon 4 processor 1600+ for notebook PCs. The first two are available immediately with Compaq, Fujitsu Siemens, and NEC-CI lined up to produce desktops based on the new desktop Athlon, and Racksaver and BOXX taking the server CPU.

The new mobile Athlon will be available soon "on a configure-to-order basis, with retail availability to follow," AMD says. Compaq has signalled its intention to offer the new mobile Athlon in its notebook line-up.

In 1K tray quantities the Athlon XP 2100+ costs $420, the AMD Athlon MP 2000+ costs $415, and the mobile AMD Athlon 4 processor 1600+ cost $380. ®
