BT Cellnet's email to its own SMS gateway service, mmail, is currently unavailable after the domain fell off the Internet.

A whois search reveal that mmailco.uk was 'detagged' on Tuesday, possibly because BT Cellnet failed to renew the domain or because of some other administrative oversight.

Beyond telling us that it hadn't discontinued the service a BT Cellnet representative was unable to shed much light on the issue, even after repeated calls from us yesterday.

BT Cellnet users who enabled the fee-charging service were able to receive an SMS message from anyone who emailed 'their number' @mmail.co.uk. Receiving a message cost subscribers 10p and sending an email message via SMS cost 20p. It cost 20p to switch the service on or off.

But with the mmail.co.uk domain offline no mmail messages will be getting through. It remains unclear when services will be restored.

Last month, users of Genie's web based-email service (which like BT Cellnet is also run by mm02) were unable to use the service for several days because of an unspecified technical problem. ®
