Toshiba will stop selling its desktop PCs in the US after pushing them unsuccessfully for the past four years. It will focus instead on its various mobile products, such as notebooks, portable servers and wireless networking.

Since getting into desktop sales there in early 1997, it never claimed more than one per cent of the market, a far cry from its notebook division, which holds as much as 13 per cent of the global market in the third quarter.

The company's 1200-strong US PC division, Toshiba America Information Systems, does not expect to cut any jobs as a result of the decision.

A spokeswoman for the company has confirmed that it will continue to sell its desktop PCs in the UK. ®
