There's insufficient broadband Net access in the UK and it's hitting the country's competitiveness.

So says a survey by the Communications Management Association (CMA) which claims that more than two thirds of respondents want broadband Net access but can't get it.

According to the FT, the report is at odds with BT's view of the marketplace, which it claims remains flat because of lacklustre demand.

BT maintains that more than half of all UK households could have broadband Net access if they want it.

It claims that more than half of all the country's schools and libraries could be hooked up and that seven out of ten Net users could also plug into broadband.

The monster telco maintains that the supply of broadband is "far ahead of current" demand, and is currently engaged in trying to drum up more interest among consumers and businesses.

The report by the CMA - due to be released later today - appears to refute this. ®
