As expected, Apple has rolled out the long-anticipated speed update to OS X, 10.1. Both Server and Client editions get their update.

The release improves Finder and OpenGL performance and adds the ability to watch DVDs and burn data CDs, Samba support and much else too, including new printer drivers.

Apple has rewarded loyalists with a free upgrade, provided they can turn up at a participating store with the relevant paperwork.

To qualify you need to have OS X already, or a G4 Mac (desktop, PowerBook or Cube), or an iBook, or one of this year's iMacs (Indigo, Snow, Graphite, Flower Power or Blue Dalmatian), and the offer's good until October 31.

Otherwise, qualifying US customers can buy the three-CD package from Apple for $19.95, or Apple UK for £14.95. Pricing for new users is £99 including VAT.®
