Flat-panel monitor

Review The flat-panel market has traditionally been out of bounds to the consumer. But while individuals with bottomless bank accounts will continue to set their sights on the larger 17in and 18in models, a basic 15in flat-panel can now be snapped up for the same price as a quality 19in CRT monitor. Or even less perhaps - pound for pound, the £299 LG FL563LE is the best deal we've seen yet.

The LG isn't the most attractive flat-panel, although its robust casing should stand up to the rigours of everyday life. At 4.8kg, it's deceptively light, although the lack of extras - DVI (digital video interface), USB and so on - is no doubt a factor. Base specifications are fine (0.3mm pixel pitch, maximum resolution of 1024x768 with a refresh rate of 75Hz), and the lack of advanced set-up options is obscured by the slightly bewildering menu system.

Flat-panel displays tend to have rather dark colour schemes, but the LG's is even more intense and brooding than usual. This won't be to everyone's taste, but for the most part, images and graphics looked vivid and brimming with life. The LG is particularly good at the extremes, and the sparkling white makes it an excellent screen for text work - not all of the characters are properly defined, but the intensity of the white background renders every word legible.

If you're chasing sleek styling or an extensive range of features, you might want to look beyond the LG FL563LE. But if you simply want to reclaim some desk space, the £299 LG has the dimensions and the image quality to fit the bill. ®
