BTopenworld has defended its decision not to pass on a £5 a month cost savings for its single user broadband service.

In July, the former monopoly telco said that from September 1 it would cut the wholesale cost of its single user IPStream 500 service to £30 a month in a bid to help stimulate demand for broadband services.

The shock move prompted a number of broadband ISPs including Nildram, Pipex, PlusNet and Zen to pass on the cut to its customers.

However, BTopenworld - the broadband Internet division of BT - has declined to pass on the reduction.

A BTopenworld spokesman seemed to think there was no need to pass on the saving because: "Our prices are competitive."

"However, we do keep our prices constantly under review," he said.

BTopenworld has also not confirmed whether it is implement BT Wholesale's decision to halve the cost of installing USB broadband for three months from October 1.

While other ISPs have been swift to react and pass on the savings, BTopenworld is still deciding whether to proceed with the promotional offer.

So we'll just have to wait and see. ®
