Half of US surfers shop online, according to a survey out today.

In March, 48 per cent of Americans over the age of 18, around 100 million people, bought goods or services on the Internet.

They spent more than $3.5 billion online during the month, up 36 per cent on March the previous year, the report by Nielson/Netratings states.

Top purchases among the 39,000 surfers quizzed for the report were travel (making a nation-wide total of $1 billion) and clothing and apparel ($368 million).

Around 81 per cent of American adult surfers have made a purchase online since they started using the Net. ®
